In Norse mythology, the giantess Norns: Urðr (the past), Verðandi (the present), and Skuld (the future) dwell at the roots of Yggdrasil, the World Tree, These three wise witches shape the destinies of gods and mortals alike by spinning the threads of life into complex tapestries. One spins out the thread of each life, another measures its length, whilst the third decided when the thread should be cut with her fearsome shears fashioned from the skulls of ravens.
